Documentary Sector of 5th Beijing International Film Festival

Time: 16-23 April 2015
Location: Beijing, China
The Documentary Sector comprises five key segments: jury and commendation; screening; forums and meetings; markets and proposals; and salon activities.
Within the 2015 Documentary Sector, 411 works from 23 countries or regions have registered. 256 of the registered films are foreign works while 155 are from China (including Sino-foreign collaborations). Over a quarter of foreign works hold various international film awards of Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Torento, Sundance, Oscars, Emmy, HotDocs, IDFA, etc.

Following three selection rounds, from the documentary films in completion thirty have been identified as “Official Selection of the Documentary Sector” from which the jury will make its final selection.

The Documentary Sector CICC Award will make one award for “Best Documentary Film”, three awards for “Nominated for Best Documentary Film", one “Special Mention by the Jury", nine films for "Commendation by the Jury" and thirty awards for “Official Selection Work". The Documentary Sector will award certificates to all films which are official selected or given a commendation.

The Documentary Sector has selected eleven domestic and foreign films of particularly high quality which will be screened in several theatres. The opening film in the Documentary Sector is Roof of the World. The Documentary Sector will also organize television screenings, salon screenings and press conferences with directors.

The Sector’s forum and meeting function aims to take full advantage of Beijing's strength in terms of its talent pool and relevant policies, and to explore reform and development within the documentary industry.

The markets segment is a new addition to the Documentary Sector in 2015 and will be fully incorporated in the film marketing events of the Beijing International Film Festival.  The aim of the Documentary Sector's markets is to establish a trading platform for documentary films, to enable effective communication in the multilateral exchange between document films and cinema, and to explore cross-sector integration of the documentary film industry.

In collaboration with partners, the Documentary Sector will organize a series of thematic salons and other activities centered on the films in competition or which are being screened, the distinguished judges and artists, and various themes relating to documentary films.
